Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)
Level 1 & 2
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori type program that is designed to help children fall in love with the Good Shepherd. Children learn about the Mass, vestments, liturgy, and stories from the Bible. Many lessons include a diorama which the children can "work" with after they receive a presentation about it. The children meet in a space called an "atrium" (room 102 at St. Joseph). Click here for more information about the CGS program in general. For more information about the CGS program offered here at St. Joeseph's, contact Kathy.Neary@stjosephcommunity.org.
St. Joseph Catholic Community currently offers Level 1 & 2. Level 1 is for children age 3-Kindergarten and meets on Sunday mornings at 8:15am & 10:15am. Level 2 is for grades 1-3 and meets on Wednesday evenings at 6pm (children must have Level 1 experience prior to being in Level 2 or special permission in order to enroll).
"When the children come to Catechesis they wait outside the classroom (Atrium). When everyone has arrived they are invited into the Atrium. They are reminded that it is a special space to be with Jesus and so we use our Atrium feet and voices. We meet at prayer corner to begin our time. There we talk about what presentation(s) we will see, how the kids' week went, and we pray. Next the children move on to their independent work while other see a presentation of a Bible story or example from Mass. Each presentation has beautiful materials for the children to use on their own to revisit that story or lesson. Through these presentations they are coming to see and know the wonder of our Good Shepherd, becoming familiar with what they see in Mass, and learning practical skills that they will carry with them for many years. At the sound of a chime the children know that it is time to clean up and meet at the prayer corner to finish class. We then review what they have learned and say a good-bye prayer."
